Presentation of a facsimile copy of the Lauryshava Gospel, 14th century at the Museum of History of Religion in Lviv
On November 15th, 2018 a presentation of the Lauryshava Gospel of the 14th century, as part of our project “Returning the Cultural Heritage to Ukraine”, took place at the Museum of History of Religion in Lviv.
The Gospel was published by the “Gorobets” Publishing House with the assistance of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation. The Lauryshava Gospel is the fourth unique masterpiece of the literary process of Kievan Rus’ of the 13th -14th centuries, which we returned to Ukraine and presented to a wide range of readers, fine art experts.
“Not more than 1% of manuscripts of princely scriptoriums have been preserved of all written ones. That is why every preserved manuscript, authentic manuscript is a masterpiece of Ukrainian medieval culture.
“Of all the manuscripts written in the princely scripts, the manuscripts have been preserved not more than 1%, so every preserved manuscript, the original is a valuable monument of Ukrainian medieval culture. The Lauryshava Gospel is related to Ukraine, Belarus, Poland, ”said the project curator Anna Gorobets.
“This is one of the most colorful Gospels, decorated with 18 miniatures. The Gospel belongs to the Lithuanian-Russian book heritage of the middle of the 14th century, when Orthodoxy was established in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. It was the formation of writing and official\business writing that was happening on Kievan Rus’ tradition, but on the basis of the Galicia-Volyn scriptorium. The fact is that, this manuscript has not been in Ukraine since the end of the 14th century. It is famous for being a book-archive of Lavrisivsk Monastery,”- said Lyudmila Gnatenko, a Researcher Worker, and a Researcher of the manuscript book.
Previously, through the efforts of our project, the following editions saw the world: Lutsk Gospel, 14th century, The Chelm Gospel,13th century stored in the Russian State Library (Moscow), and The Lutsk Psalter 1384, stored in the Medicea Laurenziana Library (Florence, Italy).
The project "Reviving the Lauryshava Gospel of the 14th Century " as part of the program “Returning the Cultural Heritage to Ukraine" received a high rating in the competition of projects in the Ukrainian Cultural Fundation. We managed to take 15th place among 299 projects that received funding. Also, “The Lauryshava Gospel,14th century " was awarded the first place in Ukraine as a publishing project among individual grants.
