The Dubno Gospel, 14th century

The texts of the four Gospels were copied here by the hieromonk Arsenius who came to this small cloister from a Supraśl monastery and later headed it as hegumen.
In the 18th century, the Gospel got into the book collection of another Dubno cloister – Monastery of the Transfiguration of Our Lord. In 1818, the library was moved from here to a Dorohobuzh monastery, and the Gospel was presented to Count M. P. Rumyantsev in the same year. After that, the manuscript was bound in a new leather cover, and pages with engravings of the Evangelists were sewn to it. Later, the Gospel ended up in the Russian State Library where it is kept today.
The Dubno Gospel is one of the few medieval handwritten book monuments of Volhynia that has survived to our time in its entirety, which is extremely valuable. Due to its integrity, it preserves important information regarding the identification of the place and time of writing, the name of the scribe of the manuscript, the history of the book, as well as information about the books that were in the Monastery of the True Cross.
Thanks to the efforts of caring people, the Dubno Gospel is returning to its homeland today in the form of a facsimile copy.
